The floating microspheres have been utilized to obtain prolonged and uniform release in the stomach for development of a once daily formulation. The major advantage of the preparation technique includes short processing time, the lack of exposure of the ingredients to high temperature and high encapsulation efficiencies. The aim of present investigation was to prepare and evaluate gastroretentive floating microspheres of verapamil hydrochloride that would retain the drug in stomach and continuously release the drug in controlled manner. Floating microspheres were prepared by emulsion solvent evaporation technique. In the present investigation three polymers were used in various concentrations; Methocel K4M, Methocel K15M and Methocel K100M. In vitro performance was evaluated by the usual pharmacopoeial and other tests such as particle size analysis, drug entrapment efficiency, flow properties, in vitro floatability studies, in vivo floatability studies in dog, in vitro drug release studies, stability studies etc. Results showed that the mixing ratio of components in the organic phase affected the size distribution, yield, drug content, floating time and drug release of microspheres. In vitro drug release studies were performed for all the prepared formulations. Rank order for percentage cumulative drug release was found to be Methocel K4M > Methocel K15M > Methocel K100M. In most cases good in vitro floating behavior was observed and a variety of drug release pattern could be achieved by variation of the drug, polymer and solvent ratio. The developed floating microspheres of Verapamil hydrochloride may be used for prolonged drug release in stomach for more than 8 h.Keywords

The study was conducted to assess the knowledge level of potato growers in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. The productivity level of potato is observed to be low in Madhya Pradesh due to various reasons among these are climate and adoptability of technologies. Potato production has played a vital role in increasing vegetable production of the country with 25.6 per cent share in total vegetable production during 2002-03. The contribution of the country in world potato pool has increased from 6.4 per cent to 7.8 per cent during last decade. Potato utilization has become more diverse with processed products commanding a large share of the potato market. Majority of the potato growers had complete knowledge about improve varieties. The data also indicated that majority of the potato growers were aware about recommended spacing (59.17%), disease management (56.67%) and selection of field (52.5%).Keywords

Liver toxicity is a major health problem of worldwide proportions. Herbal medicines derived from plant extracts are being increasingly utilized to treat a wide variety of clinical diseases. Objective of the present work was to evaluate Hepatoprotective potential of Hydro alcoholic extract of Ipomoea turpethum ischolar_main. This in vivo efficacy was reinforced by a significant dose dependent hepatoprotection (at 100 mg/kg and 200mg/kg dose) in CCl4 induced Hepatotoxicity using wistar rats five in each groups. In this study extract of plant (100mg/kg and 200mg/kg, orally) was given for 6 days daily and CCl4 (1 ml/kg, 1:1 with liquid paraffin, s.c.) is given at 6th day after 2 hours from dosing. The Hepatoprotective activity is confirmed by decreasing the activity of serum enzymes, SGOT, SGPT, ALKP, Bilirubin, Cholesterol, while it significantly increased the reduced Protein levels in dose dependant manner. The study was also supported by histopathology of liver sections. The Hepatoprotective activity of the extract is being comparable to standards Silymarin (200mg/kg). The results obtained in the present study indicate that Ipomoea turpethum is a potential source of natural Hepatoprotectives.Keywords

Background: Natural remedies from medicinal plants are considered to be effective and safe alternative treatment for liver toxicity and inflammation.
Aim: This present work was done to investigate the Hepatoprotective and Anti-inflammatory activities of Hydroalcoholic extract of Bark of Erythrina indica .
Materials and Methods: Drugs like Silymarin, Carbon tetrachloride, Liquid paraffin, carrageenan, Aspirin were used. For Hepatoprotective activity SGOT, SGPT, ALKP, Total cholesterol, Total bilirubin, Albumin, Total protein Estimation kit and for anti-inflammatory activity carrageenan-induced paw oedema method were used.
Result and discussion: The hepatoprotective activity of the Hydroalcoholic extract was assessed in CCl4 induced hepatotoxic Rats. The extract of plant (300mg/kg and 500mg/kg, orally) was given for 6 days, daily and CCl4 (1 ml/kg, 1:1 with liquid paraffin, s.c.) was given at 6th day after dosing of plant extract. Alteration in the levels of biochemical markers of hepatic damage like SGOT, SGPT, ALKP, Bilirubin, Cholesterol, Total Protein and Albumin were tested in both CCl4 treated and untreated groups. CCl4 has enhanced the SGOT, SGPT, ALKP and Bilirubin in serum, while Total protein and Albumin were decreased. The study was also supported by histopathology of liver sections. Treatment of Hydroalcoholic extract of Bark of Erythrina indica has brought back the altered levels of biochemical markers to near about normal levels in the dose dependent manner. Antiinflammatory activity was done in rats at a dose 300 and 500 mg/kg in carrageenan-induced paw oedema method. Hydroalcoholic extract of Erythrina indica bark significantly reduced the migration of neutrophils and monocytes. Results of in vivo activity lead to the conclusion that the hydroalcoholic extract of Erythrina indica bark showed predominantly significant activity in dose dependent manner, which is comparable to the standard drug Aspirin. The present study reveals that the Hydroalcoholic extract of Bark of Erythrina indica could afford a significant Hepatoprotective and Anti-inflammatory activity.
